The Day of Arafat occurs on the second day of the pilgrimage rituals. The pilgrims depart from Mecca and gather in the nearby hillside and plain of Mount Arafat and the Plain of Arafat. It is believed that in this spot, Mohammed gave the Farewell Sermon toward the end of his life.
For the whole day, from dawn until dusk, Muslim pilgrims stand in this spot in prayer and supplication. Tearful emotion can also mark the occasion. The next day will be one of the most important holidays of the Muslim calendar, Eid ul-Adha.
Although the pinnacle of the holiday takes place in Saudi Arabia, Muslims who are not participating in the pilgrimage also observe the Day of Arafat. Similar to the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Day of Arafat is viewed as a time of repentance and forgiveness for the sins of the past year. It is believed that one who fasts during this day is granted forgiveness. Therefore prayer and fasting on the Day of Arafat are observed by Muslims around the world.
