Mount Scopus

The breathtakingly high peaks of Mount Scopus overlook dazzling panoramic views of the Judean desert in one direction, and the entire city of Jerusalem in another. In ancient times, the proximity of Mount Scopus to the city of Jerusalem proved a liability, as it was used as a base of attack upon the city both by Roman legions and the Crusaders. And during the 1948 war, the location of the mountain placed it squarely in the center of the conflict.

Today Mount Scopus is best known as the home of the original Hebrew University campus—but there are other attractions as well.

The Hebrew University Campus on Mount Scopus

Hebrew University was founded before the State of Israel was established: the cornerstone was laid with great pomp and ceremony in 1925 and involved several prominent dignitaries from abroad. One of the most outstanding of the figures to demonstrate support for the university was Albert Einstein, who served on the first Board of Governors and would later donate his research documents to the institution.

Visitors often fail to realize that Jerusalem is a university town, with a vibrant student culture that spills over from the mountain of academia and into the city center. The culture is largely responsible for the colorful, cutting-edge art world that is unique to Jerusalem.

But the university is only one aspect of Mount Scopus. The mountain is also home to the ancient tomb of Nicanor of Alexandria, a contemporary of King Herod. The tomb is located in the picturesque Hebrew University Botanical Gardens, which have just recently reopened their gates to the public.

Also located on Mount Scopus is the British military cemetery, where soldiers who fell during the first world war are buried. The peaceful graveyard, untouched by the passage of time, is a sobering reminder of the vast reach of that war.
