While the exterior of the Holy Trinity Church is similar to a castle, with its towers and ornate architecture, the interior of the church is even more impressive. Massive chandeliers, baroque iconography, deep carpeting and paintings of the saints give ample testimony to more than a century of devotion. Located in the Russian Compound in the city center of Jerusalem, the Holy Trinity Church represents the devoutness of the Russian Orthodox.
The History of the Russian Holy Trinity Church
The Holy Trinity Church was established by the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society in the second half of the nineteenth century. Construction of the cathedral began in 1860 and took more than a decade to build under the auspices of architect the Martin Ivanovich Eppinger. The location of the church was chosen for its proximity to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The cathedral became a home away from home for Russian Orthodox pilgrims in Jerusalem. The Russian Compound of which the church is a part aimed to recreate the architecture and atmosphere of St. Petersburg.
During World War I, the Turks evicted all Christians from Jerusalem, leaving the church derelict. It was only in 1948 after Israel became an independent state that the Holy Trinity Church resumed its function, and is now in Russian control once again.
Tourists in Jerusalem enjoy visiting this cathedral, admiring the beauty of its interior, and attending midnight mass.
