Myth and Mystery

Myth and Mystery בתאריך 04.08.2009

Tuesday aug 4th

Beit Avi Chai presents "Myth and Mystery": three dances by different artists bring to the stage myth and mystery from the treasure trove of Jewish culture. The three are combined to create a unique, enthralling evening of dance on the stage in the Beit Avi Chai courtyard.

Opening remarks: Prof. Moshe Idel, "Necromancy and Mystery in Jewish Culture."

"This One at Last"
"This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh" (Genesis 2:23)—a duet inspired by the creation of Adam and Eve and Plato's Symposium, which describe man and woman "cleaving together" and the relationship that results from this mythic connection (12 minutes).

Choreography and performance: Tami and Ronen Yitzhaki / Music: Yehudit Mizrahi / Accordion: Lior Grossman / Costumes: Sharon Pardo

The dance was first performed in a Suzanne Dellal Centre production for the 2009 Shades of Dance festival.

"Adamdam"
A dance inspired by the Jewish legend of the Golem, the servant created from clay. The dance uses motifs relating to morality and the power of humans as creators. It wrestles with dilemmas of progress and expresses a yearning for the simplicity and innocence of yore (duet 14 minutes, solo 10 minutes).

Choreography: Arkadi Zaides / Co-creator: Sharon Zuckerman / Dancers: Bosmat Nossan and Arkadi Zaide

Music: Rif Cohen, Animal Collective / Lighting: Itay Weiser / Costumes: Baladi Company

"Petenera"
Petenera was a beautiful Jewish woman from the Andalusian village of Petenera. She captivated Spanish men, but because she was Jewish she had to turn them down, and they died for love of her. The story describes the love-hate relationship of Spanish Jewry, whose desire to blend into the local culture without assimilating led to many tragedies (20 minutes).
The music is a recording of the Amanecer Ensemble with Ladino singer Yasmin Levy, who combines Ladino and flamenco styles.

Choreography and performance: Neta Shizaf

The performance will take place in the BEIT AVI CHAI courtyard. Please dress warmly.
