The Israel Festival is the largest and most important international arts and cultural festival in the country, and it has chosen Jerusalem as its eternal home. On June 9, Switzerland and Israel join forces in "Orlando," a stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf's novel.
Details:
Director: Amit Drori
Actress: Sylwia Trzesniowska-Drori
Orlando was written in 1928 as a "fantasy biography" spanning a period of 400 years, from the late Renaissance until the 20th century. Orlando, a delicate, aristocratic boy grows up to become a young poet, who serves as a diplomat in Constantinople in the 17th century, and metamorphoses into a woman in 18th century England. After a lifetime of hundreds of years, the story ends with the immortal Orlando appearing as an androgynous 36 year old on the threshold of the modern era. Alone on stage, actress Sylwia Trzesniowska-Drori skillfully moves between the dimensions of the story and time, the identities of Orlando, and his/her obsession with poetry. The decor is a universe of rich imagery constructed from robotic elements operating as if in a spiritual sphere of their own, and, as a backdrop, surrealistic scenes created by amazing video projections which unfurl the path of Orlando's journey. Orlando was created and developed as a joint production between the Herzliya Theatre Ensemble and Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne of Switzerland. It premiered last January in Lausanne and went on to perform all over France. The Israeli premiere will be held as part of the 2009 Israel Festival.
