Goodbye, Shabbat?

Goodbye, Shabbat? בתאריך 14.07.2009

Tuesday jul 14th

Beit Avi Chai presents: "Goodbye, Shabbat?": a symposium based on issue 49 of the magazine Eretz Acheret: “Goodbye, Shabbat—Subjugation to Culture 24/7.”

The fight over the Sabbath and its character attests to broad changes in the prevailing worldview in Israel. These changes are manifested clearly in the environment in which we live. The nature and appearance of the Sabbath vary from place to place and from region to region. The many interpretations of the commandment “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy” are an indication of the depth of the differences between Israeli communities.

With:

MK Dr. Dov Khenin: “Perception of the Sabbath as a Social and Cultural Resource Rather than a Problem between Religious and Secular Jews”

Translator and editor Dina Markon: “The Sabbath for the Person or the Person for the Sabbath? Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as Representatives of Two Worldviews”

Be’eri Zimmerman, poet and lecturer at Alma College: “Between Light and Darkness, between Israel and the Nations: Is It Possible to Be Both Outside and Inside?”

Moderator: journalist Shahar Ilan
