The Old City walls of Jerusalem as they exist today were built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1534. Suleiman was the longest reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, who engaged in various architectural projects throughout his empire and was responsible for a thorough reconstruction of Ottoman law (and is therefore also known as “The Lawgiver”). He is regarded in history as a ruler who initiated a golden age in the Ottoman Empire, being a patron of culture as well as of architecture and law.
Suleiman’s walls consist of 43 watchtowers and eleven gates, though at present only seven of these latter are in use. The walls stretch to a maximum height of 49 feet and are three meters thick. Though a relic of the sixteenth century, the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City have been subject to the assault of twentieth century warfare: The perforations left from bullets are clearly visible in the stones.
Jerusalem’s identity as a walled city dates as far back as the Jebusites, for the walls are included in the account of David’s conquest of Jerusalem in the book of Samuel. His son Solomon extended the Old City walls even further.
The walls from the Jebusite period were first razed by the Babylonians, and rebuilt after the Babylonian exile by Nehemia. They were destroyed again in 1219 by Mu'azzim, Sultan of Damascus, and again by Da’ud, emir of Kurak.
Jerusalem came under Christian rule in 1243, whereupon the walls where again repaired. But the walls were destroyed yet again in 1244 when Kharezmian Tatars invaded the city.
In such a way does the story of Jerusalem’s walls become the story of the city itself: Its wars, its conquerors, and today the source of its pride.
